The Gilbert Residence
A whole-home system designed as architecture rather than equipment: nothing on the walls that did not have to be there, and nothing the family has to think about.
The house that behaves like part of the architecture. Four experiences designed as a single system: Rest, Calm, Protect, and Gather — invisible in every room.
A beautiful house that still felt like work to live in.
The architecture was finished and the interiors were resolved, but daily life was not. Lighting was managed switch by switch, room by room. Sound arrived from whichever speaker happened to be closest. Security lived on a keypad by the door, and the family had quietly learned to work around all of it. The request was not for more technology. It was for less of it to be visible, and less of it to be their job.
We began by watching the house being used.
The Experience Walk moved through the residence at the hours that actually mattered: morning, late afternoon, and the last hour before bed. We noted where light was fighting the room, where noise collected, where a guest would hesitate, and where the owners reached for a control they should never have had to find. Those observations, not a product list, became the design brief.
The evening now arrives before the family asks for it.
The primary suite and the halls leading to it shift colour temperature and level across the evening, so the house stops behaving like a workplace hours before anyone lies down. Shades close on the same schedule. In the morning the sequence reverses, gradually, without an alarm doing the work.
We removed sound before we added any.
Equipment was relocated and isolated so the mechanical hum the family had adapted to years earlier disappeared. Only then did we introduce music: invisible speakers behind plaster, tuned room by room so a level that suits the kitchen does not overwhelm the adjoining living space.
Security that never reminds anyone of the threat.
Cameras and sensors were coordinated with the architecture and the finishes before anything was mounted, so coverage was achieved without a single device arguing with a sightline. The network was segmented so that cameras, control, and family devices do not share the same path.
One touch, and the host reappears.
Entertaining scenes set lighting, shades, and music across the public rooms in a single gesture, so the owners stay with their guests instead of disappearing to adjust things. Each scene was programmed on site, in the room, with the owners present.
The house does not depend on anyone's memory.
As-built wire schedules, rack elevations, scene programming schedules, and network documentation were delivered on completion. Any competent integrator can pick the system up years from now without guessing.
The measure of this project is that the family stopped noticing it — which is exactly what they asked for.
